What is the AM Restricted Motorcycle Licence?

The AM licence is the entry-level motorcycle licence in the UK and allows riders to use:

  • Mopeds and scooters up to 50cc
  • Maximum speed of 28mph (45km/h)
  • Lightweight two or three-wheel vehicles

You can usually start riding from age 16 after completing your CBT (Compulsory Basic Training).

The AM licence gives you more permanent riding entitlement than simply riding on a CBT certificate

What is the Q Restricted Motorcycle Licence?

A Q Restricted Licence is commonly associated with riders who:

  • Hold older restricted entitlements
  • Need restricted motorcycle training or testing
  • Are progressing from lower-powered machines

We can help explain your current licence status and advise the best training route for your situation.

If you are unsure which licence category applies to you, our team will be happy to help.

What Do I Need Before Starting?

You can take the AM & Q Restricted motorcycle test if:

  • You have a valid UK provisional licence
  • You hold a valid CBT certificate
  • You have passed your motorcycle theory test

If you still need your CBT or theory test, our team can help guide you through the process.
